Patrick Mahaffy

Patrick Mahaffy, MA
Chairman of the Board

Patrick Mahaffy is a founder of Clovis Oncology and currently serves as the company's President and Chief Executive Officer. Previously, Mr. Mahaffy served in the same role at Pharmion Corporation, which he founded in 2000 and sold to Celgene Corporation in 2008.

From 1992 through 1998, Patrick was President and Chief Executive Officer of NeXagen, Inc. and its successor, NeXstar Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company. Prior to that, he was a Vice President at E.M. Warburg Pincus and Co.

Patrick serves on the board of directors of Orexigen Therapeutics, Inc. He is also a trustee of Lewis and Clark College. He has a BA in international affairs from Lewis and Clark College and a MA in international affairs from Columbia University.

Brad Bolzon

Brad Bolzon brings more than thirteen years of global pharmaceutical industry experience to Versant's biotech investment team. At Versant, he specializes in early-stage biotech investing with emphasis on new company start-ups; he has created three successful companies in partnership with large pharmaceutical firms.

Prior to joining Versant, Brad served as Executive Vice President, Global Head of Business Development, Licensing & Alliances with Roche. Before joining Roche, Brad held a series of management positions at Eli Lilly and Company in regulatory affairs, clinical research and business development.

He currently serves as a board member for Amira Pharmaceuticals, Sentient Pharmaceuticals, Metabolex, Speedel and as Chairman of the Board of Synosia Therapeutics. He is also Chairman of EuroVentures Inc, a wholly-owned start-up incubator within Versant Ventures.

Brad received PhD and MS degrees in Pharmacology from the University of Toronto and conducted his post-doctoral research training at the Ottawa Heart Institute in Ottawa, Canada.

Mike Clayman, MD

Mike brings over 20 years of experience in pharmaceutical development. Most recently, he was Vice President, Lilly Research Laboratories and General Manager of Chorus, Lilly's development accelerator.

During a long career at Lilly, Mike held a number of senior positions including Global Regulatory Affairs (where he managed seven global submissions), Cardiovascular Discovery Research and Clinical Investigation, Product Development and Technology at Advanced Cardiovascular Systems (a subsidiary of Eli Lilly), the Internal Medicine Division, and the Lilly Clinic (Eli Lilly's dedicated Phase I unit). He also served as Chair of Lilly's Bioethics Committee.

Mike received a BA, cum laude, from Yale University, and MD from the University of California-San Diego School of Medicine. Following internship and residency in internal medicine at the UC San Francisco Moffitt Hospitals, he completed clinical and research fellowships in nephrology at the University of Pennsylvania. He was appointed Assistant Professor in the School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and is a recipient of the Physician Scientist Award from the National Institutes of Health.

Sam Colella

A highly respected venture capitalist recognized for his leadership in life sciences investing, Sam Colella co-founded Versant Ventures with six other managing directors in 1999. Over the course of his career, Sam has acquired more than 20 years of successful operating experience in the high technology industry and more than 25 years of investing experience in the healthcare sector.

Prior to founding Versant, Sam managed one of the first life science-focused investing groups in the industry as a general partner with Institutional Venture Partners (IVP). Previously, he was president of a New York Stock Exchange company and held a variety of functional positions in a broad array of diverse businesses, including president of Spectra-Physics, the world's leading laser supplier, and senior manager of the Technical Products Division of Corning Glass.

Having managed investments concentrated in medical devices, biotechnology and health care technology companies, Sam is credited with an extensive list of successful public life science companies, including Alexza Pharmaceuticals, Argonaut Technologies, Arthrocare, Athena Neurosciences, Aviron, CV Therapeutics, Endosonics, Genomic Health Inc., IVAC Holdings, Onyx Pharmaceuticals, Pharmacopeia, Symyx Technologies, Thermage, Tularik and Vivus. He is currently a director of Alexza Pharmaceuticals, EuroVentures, Genomic Health Inc., Jazz Pharmaceuticals, Rennovia, Veracyte, and he is Chairman of Fluidigm.

Elaine Jones

Elaine V. Jones, PhD recently joined Pfizer Venture Investments as Executive Director, Venture Capital. She will be responsible for making and managing venture investments for Pfizer and currently is responsible for PVI investments in Merus B.V. (Utrecht, The Netherlands), NeuroTherapeutics Pharma (Chicago, IL), and Flexion Therapeutics (Boston, MA). Elaine brings 10 years of venture capital experience and a strong background in research and product assessment, built on her significant experience in pharmaceutical drug discovery and business development to the PVI team.

Most recently, Elaine was a General Partner with the venture fund, EuclidSR Partners. There, she was responsible for the fund's investments in Acurian, Fluidigm, InnaPhase and Targacept.

Prior to joining ESR, Dr. Jones began her private equity career in 1999 at S.R. One, GlaxoSmithKline's venture fund, where she managed investments including Adolor, Avantium, Nucleonics, Scynexis and Vicuron. Previously, she served as Director of Scientific Licensing for SmithKline Beecham and was a research scientist in SmithKline Beecham Pharmaceutical R&D.

Dr. Jones is a graduate of Juniata College and received her PhD in Microbiology from the University of Pittsburgh.

Alan W. Milinazzo

Mr. Milinazzo joined Orthofix International in 2005 as Chief Operating Officer and succeeded to the position of CEO the following year. Prior to joining Orthofix, Mr. Milinazzo was Vice President of Medtronic Inc.'s Vascular business, as well as Vice President and General Manager of Medtronic's Coronary and Peripheral businesses. Prior to his time with Medtronic, Mr. Milinazzo spent 12 years as an executive with Boston Scientific Corporation in numerous roles, including Vice President of Marketing for SCIMED Europe. Mr. Milinazzo brings more than two and a half decades of experience in the management and marketing of medical devices business, including positions with Aspect Medical Systems and American Hospital Supply. He earned a bachelor's degree, cum laude, at Boston College in 1981.

Andrew Schwab

Andrew Schwab is a founder and Managing Partner of 5AM Ventures.

Prior to founding 5AM Ventures in 2002, Andrew was a Principal at Bay City Capital (BCC). After joining BCC in 1999, he led the firm's investment and merchant banking activities for such companies as Cubist Pharmaceuticals, Metabolex, PTC Therapeutics, Symyx and Syrrx. Prior to joining BCC, Andrew was Vice President of Business Development at Digital Gene Technologies and a Vice President in the life science investment banking group of Montgomery Securities.

At 5AM, he has led the firm's investments in and served on the Boards of Directors of Anaphore, Ikaria, Ilypsa (acquired by Amgen), Miikana (acquired by EntreMed), Panomics (acquired by Affymetrix), Synosia and TivaMed.

Andrew received a BS with Honors in Genetics & Ethics from Davidson College and is a member of the Davidson Alumni Association Board. He is based in the Menlo Park, CA office.

Rafaele Tordjman

Rafaéle Tordjman is a Partner with Sofinnova Partners, who specializes in life sciences investments. She joined Sofinnova Partners in 2001. Before joining Sofinnova, she worked as a research scientist at the Institut National de la Recherche Médicale (INSERM) in Cochin Hospital, Paris. Previously, she was a medical doctor specializing in clinical hematology and internal medicine.

Rafaéle obtained her PhD, with high honors, in hematopoiesis and angiogenesis from the University Paris VII followed by a post doctoral fellowship in immunology. She obtained her medical degree and her specialization in Hematology and Internal Medicine as a five-year fellow in Paris University Hospitals. She also participated in the "Young Manager Program" at INSEAD (France in 2002).

Rafaéle has invested in and is on the board of Ascendis, HBI, Preglem, DBV technologies and Endotis. She was also on the board of CoreValve and of Endoart before they were successfully sold to Medtronic and Allergan, respectively.
